What is public education?

Public education includes actions that help the entire community of Nashville be aware of issues related to housing in their city. In this way, people can work together to provide mutual support and influence policy for the common good.

Homes For All Nashville - Public Education

SOMETIMES, PUBLIC ACTION IS NECESSARY TO HELP DRAW ATTENTION TO ISSUES

What we do

A crucial part of building the power to win better tenant protections, is education. We, as tenants, have to learn our rights, understand how predatory development works and understand how we can push for fair housing. As we educate ourselves we also have to educate the broader public about the issues we face.

  • We organize meetings to help groups achieve an understanding of the dynamics of gentrification, displacement and development in urban settings.
  • We support tenant groups to tell their stories and access media outlets.
  • We support tenants to speak truth to power and provide their experiences at council meetings, legislative hearings and other venues.

BUILDING #RENTERPOWER INVOLVES EDUCATING OUR CITY OFFICIALS ABOUT THE ISSUES WE FACE AND WHAT WE WANT TO SEE CHANGE

Legally, there was very little we could do to negotiate or change the situation. Having Homes For All come in to assist residents in getting media attention and getting the story out so that the rest of the community was educated about what was going on really had a tremendous impact.
